Individual Work: Reflective Learning Blog
1. What did I learn? What was new to me? Was there something that changed my views and why?
Focus on and analyze the themes important to you.
New things that I have learned from doing this project are:
a) I discover on how to plant and grow a tomato plant because I have not done this before. I thought it was hard to plant the tomato plant but it was not because one of the two plants had survived from week 2-week 14.
b) I also learned about the structure of the tomato plant, type of leaves they produce, how to propagate the plant properly, and the time where the plant is in weak condition or when they are attacked by pests/disease.
c) This project has changed my perspective towards gardening as I am not a person who loves to plant trees. After more than 10 weeks growing the tomato plant, I realize that it does not cause me a lot of money and it was easy to take care of. In future, I will consider planting more trees and herbaceous plants as I can get a lot of benefits from them.
2. What did I not understand? What went against my own ideas? Why? What was less comprehensible? Why? Issues that interested me a lot, and that I would like to study in more detail. Focus on and analyze the questions that left you puzzled.
After five weeks, one of the plants died, I thought it was caused by the way we took care of it but me and my group member realized that the type of soil that we used was not suitable for the tomato plant. We have asked for the best soil mixture recipe from experts to plant our tomato. Thus, we thought the plants were supposed to survive until week 14. In the end, the soil that we used was too compact and did not give much aeration to the plant roots thus the plant died at an early stage. This problem leads me to learn more about the types of soil that are suitable for planting tomato.
3. How have I learned or not learned best from this project?
I have also discovered that different types of plant react differently on their surroundings. We cannot expect all things will go as planned. The downsides are we should protect the plant in a more shady area during inconsistent hot weather and rainy season as this will affect the growth and biology during plant development.
4. What did I learn or not learn from this project?
This project has taught me to be more appreciative towards plants as living things that give lots of benefits to humans. This project also trained me to be more curious and to be patient towards getting into the final stage of the plant growth.
5. What the course has taught is likely to have some relevance to the project. Can you identify what this is? How are you able to apply this knowledge in your project? How does this support your development as a student?
Plant stages and development topics in this course have taught me on the basic principles of what the plant went throughout their life cycle. For example, to germinate the seeds that we bought from stores, we need to break their dormancy stage by introducing them to water and air.
For us,
6. If I were to do this project all over again, what would I do differently to ENHANCE my learning and IMPROVE my writing?
I would provide additional fertilizers to the plant and give external structural support for the plant to grow higher. I would also give emphasis on the structural development and the stages of the plant went through. As I improved on those details, consequently, I would read more about things that are lacking in my writings.
